Forestry Mulching
We grind brush and small trees into mulch where they stand. A skid steer with a forestry mulching head does the work, and the mulch stays on the ground.

Ennis sits on the Blackland Prairie, and Kachina Prairie by Lake Clark keeps 35 rare, undisturbed acres of it. Much of the land around town was farmed, and NRCS notes many old fields are now pasture. Where fields are no longer cropped, NRCS soil surveys find few to many mesquite trees. A pasture or fence row left alone soon fills with brush and saplings.
At Clear Choice, we mulch brush and small trees with a skid steer that carries a forestry mulching head. Ennis is part of our service area, which centers on Hillsboro about 40 road miles to the southwest. Here we take on brush clearing for overgrown pasture and lot clearing for new home sites. Call or text (817) 937-1506, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

NRCS soil maps show what lies under the Ennis area. Wilson clay loam covers the most ground near town, and Heiden clay comes next. Many creek bottoms around town are Trinity clay, which NRCS maps as frequently flooded.
The brush follows the soil. On the upland soils, NRCS notes mesquite where fields are not cropped, with scattered elm and hackberry. The Trinity bottoms grow a hardwood mix of elm, hackberry, oak and ash. So brush on an Ennis property tends to be mesquite in the open and hardwood saplings by the water.
Big oak and ash in the bottoms are work for a tree service. We mulch the brush and saplings around them, and the mulch stays on the ground. Fence line clearing opens up old fence rows that have grown shut between fields.
I-45 and US-287 both run through Ennis, and in 1997 the Legislature named it the official Bluebonnet City of Texas. The town is growing fast. The Census Bureau counted 20,159 people in 2020 and estimated 25,694 in July 2025. About 42 percent of its homes went up in 2000 or later, and 37 percent before 1980.
New lots keep coming. In July 2026 the city's Planning and Zoning Commission approved 160 more home lots in the Prairie View subdivision. The same night it backed rezoning about 125 acres on Country Club Road for a planned subdivision.
A building lot here often starts as brush and saplings over clay. We mulch that growth in place and leave the lot open for the builder. Grading and dirt work come next, from the builder or an excavation contractor.
Inside city limits, the city's Planning and Development office handles zoning and building permits. Applications moved to an online portal in June 2024. Its permit list covers work like demolition and accessory buildings over 120 square feet. Land clearing is not on that list, and the office asks people to call before work starts.
The city's building inspections department also inspects new fences. We clear the fence row, and a fence contractor builds the fence.
Outside city limits, call the Ellis County Department of Development. The county wants a call before you buy land, build, divide a tract or add a septic system. A new home there also needs a culvert application and a 911 address application. Land near town may sit in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, so ask which office covers your tract.
Burning brush piles from land clearing in Ennis takes a city burn permit and a Fire Marshal site visit. City rules say burning must happen downwind of structures or at least 300 feet away. Burns run on weekdays only, and the default pile limit is 10 feet around and 6 feet high.
Forestry mulching skips the pile. The mulching head grinds brush and small trees where they stand. The mulch stays on the ground as cover, so there is nothing left to burn.
When drought sets in, Ellis County's Commissioners Court can ban outdoor burning in the unincorporated county. Inside the city, the fire official makes the final call on each day's burn.
